USC IAP students and team celebrate their first Progression Ceremony
Reading Day, the day between the last day of classes and the first day of finals exams, is known as the day University of South Carolina students cram in all their last minute preparations before they tackle their final exams. For the USC International Accelerator Program team, Reading Day took on a bittersweet note as we held our very first USC IAP Progression Ceremony.Taking a quick break from their studies, 26 Integrated Accelerator and Academic Accelerator students from our first fall 2015 cohort successfully made it through their freshman year at USC – a truly momentous occasion! Our students, coming from China, India, Nigeria, Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates, celebrated the occasion by hearing from Student Services Director, Jason Vokral; Managing Director, Lauren Stone and Vice Provost and Director of Global Carolina Dr. Allen Miller. The group even heard from their own peers, two members of the IAP Student Advisory Committee, Fei Teng and Oyindamola Olorunfemi. Everyone reflected on the year behind them – the excitement of starting down a new path, creating new freiendships with people from all around the world, experiencing South Carolina culture and Gamecock traditions for the first time and even the challenges of being thousands of miles away from home, managing difficult academic coursework and even learning to confront culture shock.

During the ceremony, students received a Certificate of Progression from Academic Director, Dr. Sherry Warren, congratulating and awarding them on all they accomplished during their freshman year.
That being said, we’d be fooling ourselves if we think that freshman year of college is only about academics. All of our students arrived on campus with their own unique personalities and throughout their first year we were all able to learn a little more about each of them. To finish the ceremony off, Student Services Advisors, Ford Johnson and Madeline Willett, awarded each student with a superlative highlighting their unique hobbies, interests, friendships and identities. Take a look below at the superlative “awards” our students received!
