Earlier this month, our students adventured out to Sullivan’s island on a field trip as part of their Marine Science 210 class called “Oceans and Society”. This class is a unique course designed to immerse international students in the rich biology and geography of South Carolina’s beaches. It gives students a more comprehensive understanding of the unique region where they’re living. A trip to the beach to investigate South Carolina’s coastline and marine life is the perfect way to get some hands on experience!

Don’t forget to take a look at the pictures below and read Student Services Advisor, Madeline Willett’s recap of the day trip!

We began with an early start! Students boarded the bus early in the morning and we made our way to Charleston, South Carolina. Bypassing the beautiful and historical city for now (that’s another trip!), we found ourselves in Sullivan’s Island, one of Charleston’s most relaxing beach communities. As we loaded our coolers with picnic lunches and water bottles, we walked to the beach as a group and looked out over the Atlantic Ocean. We spent the morning hours at the beach – reading, relaxing, swimming in the ocean and getting to know students from all over the world. The Marine Science instructor, Dr. Kelly, came along and led the students in a fun game. They went racing down the beach in search of animals and elements that they had learned about in their Marine Science course and ended the game with our picnic lunch on the beach. Soon everyone boarded the bus and we went to the South Carolina Aquarium. An official guided us into the Aquarium and equipped us with maps. Students spent a few hours searching for sharks, fish from the deep ocean and even petting some stingrays. Plus, the SC Aquarium includes a few interesting extras, such as the American Bald Eagle (very patriotic). At the end of a long day, students were ready to sleep during the 1.5-hour trip back to our Columbia campus and shower off some of that sand.
